Why not make it you middle name that way it’s still apart of you and your not disappointing your mum. Sorry again for putting my own 2 cents in
i’m having this struggle, but not because i dont want to disappoint my mom (already dropped the ball about 30 times there), but because she actively fights me on calling me by my current chosen name and wants to be involved in choosing my new name. everything i suggest she hates.
“why can’t you just choose something easy to say? that isn’t weird, either.”
I’m someone who has these same emotions, wanting to pursue self expression that makes me happy, but my mother loves my name, so I can’t change that.
Tried dying my hair pink and it was obvious I loved it, her response “I love that color, just not on you”.
So I went and had it cut off, if she’s not happy I must be doing something wrong, right?
hey there! since drawing this comic almost a year ago I have since changed my mind about the whole issue. I don’t know what my mum would think but what makes me happy is what matters. So I hope you can also break free of that mind set as well!

I’ve been going by the first letter of my name, too. K.
The name my mom gave me wasn’t her first pick (she wanted to give me an obscure name from a classic book), but it was something SHE did to make HER mom happy. My mom passed away several years ago. We were very close.
For some reason, reading that you go by Jey… it reminded me that my mom’s middle name was Kay, and then it made me feel close to her all over again.
Your work is really beautiful. And funny and good. And TIL a name change is only $140. Thanks. ♥️
